In a world where superheroes are scarce, there’s one here that resides in each of us- the blood donor. The act of donating blood has the power to save lives but let’s face it, the process can sometimes be intimidating. However, thanks to a groundbreaking collaboration between Microsoft and Blood Centres of America, the experience is about to become more enjoyable and immersive. Enter Microsoft HoloLens 3, a mixed-reality device that will transform the way we donate blood!
The Heroic Union
Picture this: donning the sleek and futuristic HoloLens 3, you step into a world where reality blends with virtual elements. Turning the act of blood donation into an awe-inspiring adventure.
Blood Centers of America, the largest blood supply network in the U.S., has announced a partnership with Abbott the global leader in screening blood and plasma donations. Within this partnership is the promising study of mixed reality and donations. The study aims to evaluate whether the application of mixed reality to donation is safe, helpful and most feasible in reducing anxiety. But why?
Encouraging Millennials
Yup, that is pretty much it. Researchers want to uncover whether the deployment of mixed reality in donations will entice millennials and Gen-Z to give blood more often. U.S. blood centres have lost around 30% of donors under the age of 30 in the past decade.
At no surprise, the results so far seem promising. With the use of Microsoft HoloLens 2, immersive digital gardens are displayed for donors as medical teams collect their blood. Donors remain interactive with staff and fully aware of their physical surroundings due to the device’s see-through lens!
“It’s an ingenious application. As a physician, I need to see the donor’s eyes to make sure they aren’t having a reaction. It doesn’t impede my ability to make sure they are safe during the donation”. – Dr Alex Carterson, Abbott’s divisional vice president.
With the HoloLens 3, donors become heroes in their own right, stepping into a world where reality blends with virtual elements. The interactive journey, personalised guidance and virtual rewards enhance the experience, ensuring that every donor feels empowered and valued. Will you be looking forward to donating blood now?
